¶ Somewhat uncommon novel, which in this third edition contains a new preface in which the author gives thanks for the life of his wife, who had died since the book first appeared in 3 volumes in 1880. The book was dedicated to her & for the 3rd edition the dedication is now black lined. The author's first work of fiction, which received mixed reviews upon publication - 'Thoroughly and in every sense a novel, conceived in a light and happy vein, and scarcely even demanding a serious thought from beginning to end.' ( Athenaeum, October 23, 1880 ) and - 'It seemed somewhat coarse all through, and left a nasty taste in the mouth.' ( Academy, November 20, 1880 ). Alexander James Beresford Beresford Hope [ 1820 - 1887 ] politician, a prolific journalist and an architectural pundit of considerable influence.
